IBM dropped from 89 to 81 (max pain 80)
MSFT dropped from 57 to 51 (max pain 50)
QQQ max pain ws 26 - strong crossover on wed from 27 to finish near 25
INTC Fell thru max pain at 17.5
CSCO fell thru max pain at 15

Nearly everything made a very strong last minute move towards max pain and some fell thru.
The above is a huge list.
So I am not sure what you mean when you say a lot of calls finished in the money.

Calls were toasted at the last second, big big time.
Time value on puts was chopped to nothing.
Classic max pain action.
