Ben- Why does everyone keep talking about a "mystery" GSM1X provider after this report has come out? I asked this before and no one responded but since you are repeating it what is the story? Is it that you don't agree with this article or what? By the way, I think Unicom gets a lot with GSM1x. The GSM side gets data they didn't have access to before and the CDMA side gets coverage equal to the GSM side. All after they have MSM6300 phones that is. Don't forget the quote from the Unicom manager that called the MSM6300 like "putting wings on the dragon". I think they expect it to be very useful. Tom

China Unicom is understood to be planning trials of GSM1x services in
early-2003. GSM1x is an overlay of 1xRTT on a GSM network. Unicom has
already said it will not upgrade its GSM network to GPRS. Qualcomm's GSM1x
solution will allow Unicom to provide 1xRTT high-speed data services to its 36 mil
GSM subscribers without the need to upgrade the core GSM network. Qualcomm
has said it has signed an MoU with one of the top 5 GSM operators worldwide to
trial GSM1x in early-2003, with industry observers believing this to be Unicom.
