I wouldn't replace it, but neither do I use a wrench for a hammer. For epistemological problems, the scientific answers may not be of much use or they lack testability. Holistic approaches for any system will TEND to produce better answers in complex analysis than univariate scientific tests. But the answers may take a while to evaluate. Examples are anything that looks like "social engineering".

When I interviewed at my current company I told them sometimes an engineering solution is not an engineering solution, it is a human solution.

To illustrate, I ask how many well trained monkeys operating an automatic brain operating machine equal 1 neurosurgeon? The answer is not calculable.
