Why do i keep thinking this is all contrived. It just doesnt read right to me. Can the folks who saddam views as his friends(french, ruskys) be talking to him to get out, because those crazy americans led by the madman Bush, wont listen to reason? Cut him a sweet deal. Perhaps the Riviera instead of the Hague? Anyone know if Milosec ever was offered a deal before Kosovo? Mike

The French and the Russians have contracts in Iraq (saw this somewhere). Blair is not on the left. The concept of left and right is out of date. The main thrust of US politics today is power to control oil and a reduction of civil rights.

Oil is what Bush and Blair need. Any contracts that Iraq has will be null and void after Saddam is toppled. If Saddam leaves quietly then B&B will then have a difficult time getting Iraqi oil.
As for the people in the area, I don't think that any of the leaders in the west care what they think.

One could also argue that the French support the spirit of the UN resolutions on this matter but I doubt that. They are plying their own interests.
