I saw the ruthless part allright....

you know, a guy that worked for one of the government "conglomerates" explained why (and how) the Chinese are not worried about a possible US embargo...

He said, if they do impose it, what we will do is simply move the production to one of the maquiladoras we own in Mexico, and introduce the product (he used apparel to illustrate his example), under the NAFTA rules, whereby the article has to have certain percentage of Mexican "production" to qualify... so, he continued, they could ship the article cut and ready for final closure or even just to put the label and claimed that it was "Made in Mexico"

Now, how do you "monitor" or "control" this ? trust the Mexicans to do it ? -lol

As for being Communists ? roflol....

just about everyone I met, saw themselves as "enterpreneurs" I have never seen so many cell phones in use all at the same time making deals (an this was about 5 years ago or so)... not even in Shanghai, it was in Hangzhou, a "small" (by Chinese standards) city of a few million... -g

They are mere tyrants and they will call themselves whatever it will be acceptable, so long so they are un control....

as for being open, you are right, they are indeed very jealous to open up... but on the other hand... I wonder how much this is because there is no "challenge" of significant strength by westerners to try to break in... (much like Japan) and I wonder how much this is due to the difficulty of the language... this of course is a mere conclusion based on my own observation, I do not have any factual evidence to support this
