GSM1X vs. GSM+1X

What are the pros and cons of overlaying GSM1X compared to operating independent GSM and CDMA networks in parallel? On the carrier side, I imagine that the major and only benefit of GSM1X is the ability to recycle the GSM MAP core network without having to build out ANSI41 for the CDMA side. From the consumer side, my understanding is that there is no difference-- GSM/GPRS handsets, CDMA handsets (SIM enabled), and multimode handsets all operate the same under both scenarios (as long the coverage area is the same for all RAN).

That raises an academic question... Had GSM1X been announced before CHU began their CDMA overlay, would it have been a more compelling alternative? And given that CHU has already rolled out a robust parallel CDMA network, does it make more sense to use CDMA or GSM1X BTS's to "fill in" existing gaps in CDMA coverage?
