SEC backs off two auditor independence proposals By Leticia Williams

The accounting industry won key concessions Wednesday in the areas of tax services and auditor rotation after the Securities and Exchange Commission backed down from tougher proposals. In adopting new auditor independence rules, the SEC voted unanimously to permit accounting firms to continue to provide tax compliance, tax planning and tax advice to their clients, subject to the approval of a client's audit committee. The SEC had originally proposed to ban certain tax services work. The commission also softened a proposal that would have called for the wholesale removal of audit teams from a certain client after the five years.
