IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 21, 2003-- -- Low thermal resistance extends life -- Wide viewing angle excellent for backlighting applications
Microsemi Corp. (Nasdaq:MSCC - News), a leading manufacturer of discrete semiconductors and power management integrated circuits, today announced a new line of high brightness white light emitting diodes (LEDs) in an exclusive package targeting backlighting and signage opportunities. The Optomite(TM) package offers excellent color consistency with a patent-pending process for handling the phosphors that control LED color. This process provides dramatically superior consistency across the color spectrum of a single LED, as well as across a production lot of LEDs -- both longstanding industry problems.
Designated the UPWLEDxx, the new devices take advantage of Microsemi's patented Powermite® packaging technology in the rugged application-specific Optomite version created solely for light-emitting diodes. Optomite products offer an industry-leading viewing angle ideal for backlighting applications, as well as thermal resistance two times higher than the nearest competitor.
"Microsemi is committed to the lighting market," said James J. Peterson, Microsemi president and CEO. "We are excited to offer our first white LEDs into this market where Microsemi already has established a leadership position in powering CCFL lamps for color displays. We intend to carry over these strengths to include a broad range of driver and lighting technologies," he said.
Microsemi's LEDs are complemented by its impressive line of LED driver circuits that include the LX1882(TM), LX1990(TM), LX1991(TM), LX1992(TM) and LX1993(TM) power management devices.
Microsemi's new high brightness white LEDs are ideal for applications including keypads, panel/button/switch indicators, backlighting, signage, signals and marker lights.
Complete technical information and data sheets for the UPWLEDxx, are available on the Microsemi Web site, www.Microsemi.com. Samples and evaluation boards can be ordered through this site, or from Microsemi sales representatives and franchised distributors.
