Location-based services, or positioning-based services, have yet to arrive on a full scale as few carriers have implemented sufficiently precise technology in cellular networks, and since GPS has not yet been sufficiently miniaturized. Despite shortcomings, however, it is possible to achieve a limited kind of positioning services in current GSM networks, proved by PsiNT's new miniGPS application for Series 60 smartphones such as the Nokia 7650. The main purpose of miniGPS is to define events which can be triggered based upon positioning information retrieved from the GSM network. Using the unique identifiers of celullar towers, the application lets users create a database of network cells by adding the ones they are currently within reach of, and also displays this information along with signal strength for those interested in the technical aspects. Ill: PsiNT Using cell information stored in the database, users can create events that will be triggered based on whether a user logs in our out of a specific cell. Currently, miniGPS offers six event types: Log in alarm, Log out alarm, Log in switch profile, Log out switch profile, Log in power off and Log out power off. Also, cells can be grouped, allowing users to create group-specific events rather than events specific to an individual cell. As an example, a users will be able to set his Nokia 7650 to play an alarm when his user logs into the cell closest to the end station for the morning commute, independent of whether the subway is delayed or not. Other uses include switching to the Outoor profile when leaving the office, or switching to the Home profile upon returning home for the day. A trial version of miniGPS is available for download from the PsiNT website, while the full version can be purchased for $14.95 USD. ----- This is what passes for location based technology in Nokialand<g>.
