i'm not sure you can say with authority there will be no war...

that is a hope, and a reasonable possibility...but it attributes a s a rational mindset to saddam.

at this point, human instinct for self-preservation on his part is the best hope...but having been able to withstand personally the repercussions of the gulf war, as you recall, thanks to the U.S desire to establish and maintain our coalition, we were precluded from going into iraq...our military objective was to oust him from kuwait...

i think he may indeed be sufficiently deluded as to his staying power that he may resist.

and of course all of the handwringing of the opposition to a u.s. military move only serves to reinforce that.
