There is nothing obvious about it. The population has many attributes. Some people just automaticaly focus on race.

There is an implicit assumption here that race is not a predictor of ability.

I don't believe there are good scientific studies to support this assumption.

I would not allege that the difference is one that ought to be a factor, but following your logic white students ought to receive preferential treatment over Asians.
