That's silly. I agree. That struck me as a reach when I first saw it. But that's a quote from someone interviewed, not an reflection on the balance of the reporting. So what's the real cause, if any, of the decline? Don't think anyone knows. How could they? They are just individuals finding patterns in their experience, patterns which may or may not be influenced by their bias. So it is with interpreting much of the change that goes on around us. Some will be clearer at some point in the future. For some we will never know. It's natural for people to want explanations and to find a way to have them. As long as they don't create explanations out of whole cloth, it seems reasonable to me. The article on the subject in today's Post mentioned concerns about abortion as a possible cause, along with the others.
