Whatever we may think about Islamic
fundamentalism, it is a powerful voice in a world that regards its traditional cultures as threatened by materialistic
and corrupt Western values. It is a reaction to an excessive rate of "modernization" that has not been accompanied
by greater social justice or decreased relative poverty.

I don't buy this, even though you hear it a lot. America isn't hated because of its values, it's hated because of its politics and the biggest issue is that of Israel. The U.S. needs to push for a Palestinian state and once it happens give it as much aid as it gives Israel. Just you watch the terror stop as soon as this happens.

And as much as I appreciate your worst case scenarios, I really think that the odds that the U.S. can't sweep through Iraq and dispose the country of Saddam in quick order is remote. Just imagine how much better the area and the world will be once these two things happen.

What a ludicrous statement.

If this was indeed the case, fundamentalists would be arising from the poorest of nations, such as India, Cambodia, Vietnam, Eritrea etc. Islamic fundamentalists are not out to create any sort of "greater social justice" as you imply; they are simply out to wreak havoc. The people who piloted the jets into the WTC had spent about $500,000 preparing for their nefarious acts. If they truly were out for social justice, they would have spent this money helping those in dire need in many middle eastern countries.

OT

Jacob had "Rosy" and "NotRosy" scenarios. "Not Rosy" was not stated to be "worst case."

1. Last I heard, India and Rwanda have no oil. Big difference!

2. A miliary coup usually just changes personalities in the states in question. Backward, repressive policies stay the same as does their fear/greed relationship with the US.

3. The "War on Terrorism" like the "Cold War" will be costly, but we will win and the stock market will not be derailed by it. The danger is not ideology, but technology. "Civil Liberties" have been a myth for some groups throughout our history. You are looking at the first knee jerk reaction to a tragedy. THe pendulum will swing back for most.
