The big picture counter argument that is being danced around is that the black population of Michigan is mostly unqualified or undeserving of attending the University. It all comes down to what you call "qualification". To me, "qualification" for admission into a university ought to consist predominantly of GPA, SAT/ACT score, augmented by whatever criteria the university deems appropriate. Period. But the university MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO DISCRIMINATE IN FAVOR OF BLACKS, WHITES, OR ANY OTHER RACE, where "DISCRIMINATE" means "GIVE PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT TO". The entire problem is that UM is discriminating against whites. Eliminate the discrimination, and there is no issue.
