I don't think he talked about the 90's effect or anything concrete. I think his point is that the US media did a pretty lousy job in terms of telling the truth about the US economy. (that kind of illusion about wealth is only an example). And he was also amazed by the silence of the majority of the people in the US about the Bush tax cut proposal. Seems few people realize what kind of long-term damage it will do for the US economy.

I guess we do think differently, I happen to like Reich and agree with him on most things he said.
