I think several simultaneous forces are at work

gold commercials are hedging to a higher risk control level

they have critical shorts linked to the dollar and TBonds

they abused heavily gold to raise cash for gambling, I mean playing the gold carry trade or yen carry trade

the USGovt has assumed (guaranteed) much of their positions
esp true if BushSr has connections to Barrick

nothing for certain, FigMan, just guesses
