michael, there is danger but before gorbachev there was breznev, just a few years before. Things can change quickly. I suspect we are within 20 years of that with china and in chinese terms and taiwan terms, 20 years is no big deal. Even the tibetans can hang on. I think a balance US policy--carrots and sticks will work. Involve them more in economic progress--democracy will come because you cant have eco progress over time without folks making decisions for themselves, political too. mike
