I would just point out that many suicides or suicide attempts are not people who have been suffering for years and have no reasonable way out, they are not all hopeless cases who have carefully decided that they no longer want to endure suffering that can not otherwise be ended.

As we have been discussing here, making suicide illegal does not stop suicide. It's a pretty pointless law in that we can't prosecute those who are successful and we choose not to prosecute those who are not. I have not yet heard an argument for making it illegal. If it were not illegal now, what argument would you use in proposing that it be made so? I don't think the fact that most suicide attempts are not well grounded, on which I agree with you, is relevant. Since you keep making a point about it, you must think there's an "ergo" in there somewhere. I wish you would tell me where. Fill in the blank. "Since most suicides are not well thought out, we should make suicide illegal because _________"

I find myself chuckling sometimes at us situational libertarians. Yeah, we're libertarian as long as something near and dear to us is not at stake. My personal bugaboo is school choice. As much as I'm into choice in principle, I find it hard to give up the one institution left that stirs the melting pot and gives us some shared perspective and experience. You've been giving me a few chuckles, too. <g>
