By the way, it's too bad your latest image of Asian-American "achievement" is some chest-bumping Asian dude on American Idol. <G> That show is the perfect example of what's wrong with pop music today. But that's a different story ...

I hope you're kidding. I thought the guy was hilarious......not the typical, over-excelling-in-school- and-work, intellectual type Asian. He just wanted to have some fun.<g> Plus, he was so proud to be Asian and to tell everyone. He really cracked me up.....the whole show cracks me up.

What I like best is the guys/gals who can't sing worth sh-- who insist they're good and should go to Hollywood. They can't get them off the stage......very pitiful.

<A. Tan really has some incredible insights into people.>

It's more of the unique perspective she illustrates, rather than some exceptional insight she possesses. That along with good writing led to groundbreaking storytelling.

I agree that she has a unique perspective but I still think she has incredible insight into the motivations and character of people......an example.....the story of the woman who's grandmother was a concubine in China and had been browbeaten by her parents and then the other concubines in her master's house.

At the death of her mother, the concubine's daughter refused to be that weak but after she had emigrated to the US, her own American daughter proved to have the same weakness of character that her Chinese mother had shown, two generations away. The scene where the American daughter was sitting in the rain when her husband showed up blew me right out of the water.
