Chirac/UN Iraq Inspectors: `Extra Delay Is Necessary'

22 Jan 15:31

PARIS (AP)--French President Jacques Chirac suggested Wednesday that he
favors giving U.N. weapons inspectors several months to search Iraq for
prohibited arms.

In an interview on national television, Chirac indicated he favored granting
a request by the U.N. chief inspectors for more time to determine whether Iraqi
leader Saddam Hussein was hiding weapons of mass destruction.

"An extra delay is necessary," Chirac said on France-2 television.

The projections gave the party of Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende 43
seats, the same as it won in elections eight months ago.

But national television said Labor, which was evicted from power last May,
made a remarkable recovery to win a projected 42 seats, up from 23.

The broadcast didn't give details of how it conducted its survey, but the
state-financed television is the official outlet for releasing results.
