Hi Mq - the allegations that North Korea and Iraq have smallpox long predate Bush's hapless "axis of evil" peroration, so dinna fash yersel.

This article says it was discussed in the news media in 1999, which is consistent with my recollection.
intelmessages.org

No, it makes no sense for anyone to release smallpox into the world. The death toll, as I have been pointing out for quite some time now, could potentially be 2 billion people, disproportionately those living in the Third World in already terrible conditons.

On the other hand, the virus appears to be in the hands of a man who argues that he is able to defeat the United States, with God on his side.

Strictly speaking, of course, that's true. God, being able to create the entire universe, is certainly able to defeat the United States if He/She/It decides to do so. It would be hubristic to deny this.

Nevertheless, as a great man (Damon Runyon) once said, "the race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, but that's the way to bet." God may decide not to get involved in this conflict, or, who knows, may decide that right is on our side?

I'd like to think that God is on the side of those who open the prisons, who liberate the slaves, who stop the torturers, who provide the antidotes to the poisons, who heal the sick, comfort the afflicted, feed the hungry, nurture the children, give voices to the silenced, and justice to those whose rights have been violated, and of course, I'd like to think that this is us.

Well, it's likely lots of folks have smallpox ...

cryptome.org

True, releasing the virus would be enormously self-destructive.
But if you are going to get whacked by the USA anyway,
well, maybe it would be a nice farewell card. Hey, Bush
says Saddam has all these WMDs. So it seems to me Saddam
will use them if attacked. What's going to stop him? A lecture
on civics?

I'm getting rather tired of the pro-war jingoism (sp?) that
is running rampant in the US. Lots of folks are just soooo
confident and are looking forward to the pretty pictures
of the smart bombs detonating on top of the evildoers as
we Americans gorge on ice cream in the
comfort and safety of our own homes, raptly
watching the action via CNN. It will be swell.

OT. My husband and I are moving to Wellington in July.
NZ is a wonderful country, now we just need to find a
place in Wellington without too much wind.
