Pale = the fence around civilization to keep barbarians out. Unfortunately, the fences are leaky these days, in the highly mobile world, as we found with Osama's 911 gang. The barbarians were denied a modicum of civilization in Afghanistan by the USA and USSR fighting a proxy war, with the USSR doing a Vietnam by invading. The main thing we have to do to keep them happy is build a United States of Freedom and defeat in battle the opponents of civilization. The wishy-washy UN is not much use. With a sensible UN replacement, there wouldn't be many battles required. Mqurice
