Although I have no idea about the Chris Hodkins conflict
You don't want to know. I have no doubt it was the longest, bloodiest, and nastiest war ever fought on SI. It was easily a year and a half long. It rearranged the political landscape on the old LWP-RWET Boxing Ring thread. Liberals supported and befriended conservatives and conservatives supported and befriended liberals. It destroyed what had been a pretty good thread.

And it was all because of one idiot jerk who was too stubborn and prideful to admit he had wrong some people.

I argued a few years ago that management needed a two-tiered policy in regard to thread communications. Obviously, they didn't think it was a good idea. I believed the stock threads should be reserved for stock issues, and moderated closely, while the political threads (or former coffee shop threads), should be given more allowances.
I seem to remember they did that for a while. But it's gone now.

Name-calling is just the tip of the ice-berg when it comes to lack of civility destroying these threads. Being overtly petulant, condescending, or pompous can be just as destructive as name calling imo.
True.

The solution seems to be the moderated thread concept.
Yeah. We get to do SI Admin's work. And it doesn't work very well, as the current contretemps shows.

And all those destroyed stock threads.

BRING BACK JLA!!!

AND JILL!
