[President Bush] compared Hussein to Hitler. And yet you say he didn't plan to remove him? or do you believe he thought US aggression would magically make Saddam disappear? Do you remember him threatening Saddam, the bombing of Baghdad, the searching for Saddam

Yes, Karen, President Bush thought destroying most of Saddam's army (it turned out that more of the Republican Guard was left than anyone thought at the time), combined with the humiliation of being driven out of Kuwait, would cause Saddam to be overthrown. Bush had no mandate for conquering Baghdad, and he had absolutely no wish to try.

I take that to mean, you believe he was going for Saddam's removal but extenuating circumstances prevented it?

He was going for Saddam's overthrow, not directly by the hands of American troops, but indirectly through a coup or an uprising. (Chances of killing Saddam directly were always 1000 to 1) What Bush and the Saudis really wanted was the replacement of Saddam by a "Saddam Lite" - another dictator who would be less aggressive and more rational.

Now we have the less bright, less competent Bush plotting a war with no idea what to do after invading, no real plan for the future.

Karen, if you persist in thinking that Bush is dumb you are in for a lot of surprises. I'm sure Bush will make his share of mistakes, but he is not dumb. How dumb was it to go out and campaign in the Midterm election and have the Republicans take over the Senate instead of losing seats like everyone expected? As Mark Steyn quipped, "If you think that Bush is dumb, how dumb do you have to be to keep losing to him?"

Look to the rocky Afghanistan govt and you will see that we have problems with stabilizing govts far from our shores whose agenda never intersects with ours.

Actually, Afghanistan doesn't seem to be doing too badly, considering the place was lawless rubble to begin with. We should be doing more (though a lot of the whining can be discounted as NGOs begging for more money), but the place seems to be improving. Two million refugees have returned to Afghanistan. If the place hadn't improved, they wouldn't be coming back.
