I don't really know what he meant. But here is what I think he meant. (The mere fact that I have to guess at it is enough to justify an apology to the guy)

I think JLA wished to use the term "queers" in association with the neo-peaceniks simply to disparage the peaceniks, since the word "queers" encapsulates people whose behavior is ridiculous, whether sexual or otherwise.

Perhaps since the word "queers" can denote sexually weird folks, JLA used the word and applied it in another sort of context-- to disparage the demonstrators as "kooks." Likely the homosexual aspect of the word had some influence inasmuch as homosexuals are indeed queer. But the main point of the word was to disparage the demonstrators - NOT homosexuals.

That is what I think.
