You could raise the standard of material consumption in Afghanistan up to that of Saudi Arabia, and you'd still have a society where 19 young men, from the middle class, with college educations, become suicide bombers.

As I see it, Muslims want the material prosperity of the West, but they reject the rest of Western culture. The problem is, it's a package deal. It is Western culture that creates the conditions for material prosperity. Muslims can't achieve prosperity without freeing their women, adopting a less medieval political system, instituting freedom of expression, and so on.
