Finally got around to removing Network icon using tweak UI.
When I unchecked desktop icon for Network Neighborhood I got a message box indicating all kinds of consequences. I am not that adventurous so have decided to live with the icon for now.

I think it would have worked, but don't understand all of the potential changes that would occur.
