Ted the biggest current source of harm is that the tribes basically own the reservations. The people who live there do not own private land for the most part. They can't borrow against property so they can't get a mortgage. Also many of the reservations are inhospitable to business. Furthermore the BIA gets in the way half the time even when the tribe is trying to do something right. If a lot of this socialism and multiple levels of government management where swept out of the way most Indians on the reservations would do better in the long run, and perhaps in the not so long run as well.
