Taipei, Jan. 21 (Bloomberg) -- China in the second half displaced Japan as the world's second-largest market for personal computers, after the U.S., market researcher International Data Corp. said.

A total of 6.3 million PCs were shipped in China in the period compared with 5.7 million in Japan, IDC analyst Kitty Fok said. Shipments in China will probably increase by 18 percent this year, and in Japan by 4 percent, she said.

``The educational and government sectors accounted for a large part of China's demand,'' Fok said. ``Consumer demand will contribute to growth this year.''

China last year became the world's largest market for mobile phones. The world's most populous nation is attracting investment from electronics manufacturers with a market that's growing faster than those in the rest of the world.

Sales of PCs worldwide dropped by about 4 percent last year, while the Asian market grew. China accounts for more than half of the PC market in Asia, excluding Japan.

More evidence of the size and growth rate of technology in China. This market is still scoffed at by many but will continue to surprise on the upside.
