I have never heard this quote before. Do you have a source? It doesn't sound like Cicero. Here is a Cicero quote from the II Philippic:

The name of peace is sweet, and the thing itself is beneficial; but there is a great difference between peace and servitude. Peace is freedom in tranquillity, servitude is the worst of all evils, to be resisted not only by war, but even by death.

Hi scott,

Bill Ulrich pointed me toward the source of this quote, which comes from a letter Cicero wrote to Aulus Caecina. The war he was refering to was the imminent civil war between Caesar and Pompey. This sheds a different light on things, don't you agree?
