I gave my high school kids an essay about multiculturalism. I asked them to attack or defend it- they could do either. The only requirement was to write a good essay. I only got one essay attacking it- I think the young man wrote it for shock value. But he did a good job, and I gave him an "A". Every other student in the class wrote to defend it. Of course I have several Hispanic students, students from Pakistan, a student who is an Afghan refugee, and a few gay students, who occasionally write about being gay in their papers.

A few of the boys have hostile and troubling attitudes toward gays, but most of the kids are great, and very tolerant. They are good people. And FWIW NONE of them want to go to war, or fight Iraq. One of them (my boy who wrote the anti-multiculturalism paper) is ok with nuking Iraq, but he doesn't want to have to fight over there, or have an extended war. I took that as a good sign :-)
