UPDATE - AEP's Mich. Cook 2 nuke shut Sun. for work
Monday January 27, 11:08 am ET

(adds details from company)
NEW YORK, Jan 27 (Reuters) - American Electric Power's 1,090 megawatt Cook 2 nuclear unit in Michigan shut early Sunday following a manual reactor trip, an event report Monday from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said.

Unit 2, near Bridgman, Michigan, shut for work on its diesel generators, and while AEP does not discuss the length of outages, a plant spokesman said the outage "is not expected to be lengthy."

On Friday, the unit was operating at full power.

Meanwhile, the adjacent 1,035 MW Unit 1 remained shut since about Jan. 15 due to a transformer fire.

The two units provide power for more than 2 million homes. There was no talk of alternate service.

American Electric Power Co. Inc. (NYSE:AEP - News) shares were trading down $1.40, or about 5.5 percent, to $24.25 on the New York Stock Exchange
