Perhaps part of the war was over oil?

Naah, that was our "Altruistic" one. We had no selfish interest there. It was a combination of the Cold War, Sec of State Dulles desire to help out the Catholic south, and the Kennedy's need to redeem themselves for the Cuban Debacle. Then Johnson was the "Tar Baby."

As i mentioned yesterday, when you brought it up, i remembered that oil was in fact an issue along with democracy, invasion by north, catholicism in south. Choose your poison. In the tapes LBJ admits to knowing it was hopeless and didnt want to be stigmatized by Republican right wingers that we had lost indo china. The democrats were tarred prevously with having lost china so politically LBJ couldnt let this happen so 50k amercians + millions of Vietnamese died for this. mike
PS Please dont confuse neocons with oldycons whose views were pre-historic. Republicans other than northern republicans were violently anti communist, anti civil rights, pro right wing military regimes, and pro balance budget to a fault.

I assume you mean the Vietnam War. If so, my reading is not. Certainly every bit of public statements I can recall made it about a misplaced ideological campaign in which we were on the wrong side of a revolt against colonialism.
