Remember the vietnam china border war. A Ho dominated vietnam, almost certainly would have become communist even if a coalition at first. But there national needs would have led them perhaps to befriend the west(as well as USSR) because their prime national threat was china. The French background probably would have made the US a more acceptable friend than the french. That maybe was where karen was going with this.
Just as we lumped USSR and China together, we made the same mistake with Vietnam and China--thinking of them as a monolith. There were plenty of republicans back in the late 50s who thought the Sino-Soviet split was just a ruse. mike
