DJ Saddam/Wells -2: Some Wellheads May Already Be Wired - US

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--U.S. intelligence indicates that Saddam Hussein is planning to sabotage Iraqi oilfields in the event of a war, and some wellheads may already be wired, MSNBC reported Friday, citing a senior military official.

Cable News Network quoted the official, who was speaking at a background briefing at the Pentagon, as saying, "There are a number of indicators activities are planned and may already have begun."

As a result, the U.S. plan for a possible war includes preparations to seize control of Iraqi oilfields as soon as fighting begins, before Saddam can blow them up, according to the official.

DJ Saddam/Wells -3: Could Cost Iraqi Economy $30B-$40B

CNN said Iraq is estimated to have about 1,500 wellheads - about 1,000 in the south and 500 in the north.

Saddam could also release about 2 million to 3 million gallons of oil into the Persian Gulf through a system of pumps and manifolds, which could cause considerable damage to the environment and desalinization plants, CNN reported.

The reports said it is estimated that if Saddam was successful in torching oilfields in Iraq, the effort to fight the fires and repair the damage would take about two to three years and result in damage of about $30 billion to $40 billion to the Iraqi economy.

The U.S. official said the overall effect on the world oil market would be minor, MSNBC reported.
