I've asked several of my friends who drive SUVs what kind of gas mileage they get and most of them say they don't know. How would people make a decision about going to a more fuel efficient car if they don't even know what their current one gets?

Although I agree with you they would drive them if they couldn't tell the difference in appearance and price, but as it stands, a lot of people aren't driven to buy a fuel efficient car as a priority until the price of gasoline goes up.

I've always driven a car that gets 28-36 miles to the gallon. It's never been the money as much as I like being less consumptive. But I've also taken some ribbing for my modest taste in vehicles. For a while there it seemed as though conspicuous consumption was making a big come back, people wanted to show how well off they were by not caring what the gas mileage was on their car.
