Germany total population around 84 million have more unemployed people than the US

German newspapers Bild and Die Welt quoted experts saying that unemployment in the Eurozone's largest economy could rise 320,000 to 4.54 million in January, highlighting the ongoing stagnancy in the labor market. The lack of improvement in German unemployment has intensified pressure on the Schroeder government to enact measures to jumpstart the flagging economy, but given the EU Commission's censure of Germany's budget deficit, the government is coming under increasing domestic pressure to implement fiscal stimulus plans at the risk of widening the budget gap.

German preliminary harmonized CPI rose 1.0% m/m in January versus 0.2% in December. HICP increased 1.1% y/y, matching last month's rise. The CPI climbed 0.9% m/m compared to 0.1% the previous month. On an annualized basis, the CPI rose by the same percentage as the month before by 1.1%.
