Ted Re...Do you think you all even understand what the goal is?
According to you, it must be to make Michigan atone for all of the sins done by mainly a minority of southern whites 200 yrs ago. Why are you punishing Michigan, when Michigan, like WI. fought on the side of the union in the civil war, to end slavery. ONe of the problems is the definition of proportional representation. Are we talking about the population of Michigan, the Midwest, the whole nation. Are we talking about just blacks, some other minorities, all minorities, people who are mixed minorities, etc. Just who defines what proportional representation is, and secondly, more importantly, shouldn't proportional representation also include a representation of the proportions of each race who desire to go to school. Lets say we have 1 mil. blacks, and 9 mil whites. And what if 35% of the blacks, and 50% of the whites desire to go to school, for a total of 350,000 blacks and 4,500,000 white students, for a total of 4,850,000 students. If the schools cannot accept 10% of the students, leaving 4,365,000 which are accepted, which students should get rejected, 10% of each group which is applying, or in the UM case, considering that 10% of the population is black, should the UM have 10% of its student body black, which is 435,000 students, which would mean that the UM would have to accept all of the black students from the state, plus import another 85,000 from out of state, and reject (4,365,000 - 435,000 blacks, = 3,930,000 of 450,000 white students accepted. Which means under your formula, every black who wishes, + 85,000 from out of state go to UM, while 570,000/4,500,000 or 12.5% of whites are rejected. And that is fair to you, forcing the taxpayers to find a spot for a far bigger proportion of blacks who wish to go to college, than whites who wish to go. And I doubt if the figures are very far off. A bigger proportion of white students graduate from high school, and on average, white students have higher grades, so it would stand to reason, a bigger proportion would want to go to college. The problem is that you are trying to correct something at the college level, which needs to be corrected in k 1-12. And you are forcing UM of diverge from it mission of education, to one of being responsible for racial diversity. We already have ruined our high schools with all of this busing and diversity crap, now after that failed, now you want to ruin the colleges. Why not fix the problems of high schools first, then if you raise the proportions of blacks to 50%/black population, and their test scores, then you won't need all of these artificial AA programs to correct a perceived injustice. |
