There are always lot of clever people doing contingency planning for every concievable future. But, until 9/11, public opinion in the U.S. would not have tolerated the Bush Plan; at the core, Americans would prefer to be loved than feared, and we've never really accepted a self-image as Imperialists.

9/11 changed that, for now. The Cowboys have a free pass, now, until they make a big mistake. Unfortunately, it may have to be a mistake as big as Vietnam, before the pendulum of public opinion swings the other way. And then, as after Vietnem, it will probably swing too far in the other direction.

We live in interesting times, and things look to getting even more interesting.
