It is the gamble at the heart of the Bush strategy - the status quo will lead inevitably to increased chaos and security risk so, however painful, begining to clean up the mess is the less risky approach.

I don't know how to handicap this but the Bush approach is far from a sure thing and may accelerate the chaos if it fails. That is the real tradeoff, IMO, slow decline with no chance of a turnaround vs. a chance for turnaround at the risk of accelerating the problem.

It is not surprising that this is raising anxiety levels around the world. Denial is a very attractive alternative.
