ok, enough, in all seriousness, the real GDP number is subject to all sorts of manipulation because fudge factors like "GDP Deflator" depend on the by-now infamous "basket of goods". and then there is the whole process of deciding what is and isn't a direct contributor and blah blah blah.

in all seriousness...all parties sharing power have a vested interest in making the GDP number has positive as plausibly possible, at least most of the time, because it means they can justify more spending.

this applies to both sides of the american political aisle, which i probably don't have to point out as at this point it must be patently clear to all that republicans and democrats both love to spend other people's money.

Max: The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) calculates and releases GDP. bea.doc.gov

Having done Government Reporting for the Big Oil company I retired from in late 2001, I can say that even without political influence, GDP numbers must be revised due to early reporting deadlines for imprecise preliminary quarterly data followed by "final" reporting of actual quarterly data due a month later. Subsequent restatements of quarterly data would likely add a third level of GDP restatement.
