I'm hopeful that, even at this late date, we can back off from the brink. The President does not have the support of:

1. the Secretary of State
2. his own military. Today's generals were lieutenants in Vietnam, and they know what happens when you get into an unpopular open-ended war that hasn't been adequately justified to the troops and their wives.
3. half the US public
4. 80% of Europe's people
5. 95% of people in Muslim countries
6. any major NATO government except UK.
7. China, Russia
8. UN

Hopefully, that headwind will stop the rush to war. But, having sent 150,000 troops to the other side of the planet, it would be humiliating to back down now. "Saving face" has started and prolonged many wars.
