SKT capex strategy questioned
24-January-2003

Analysts are expressing caution about the ability of South Korean operator SK Telecom's management, following an about-turn by the firm over its capex figure today. Just two days ago SKT announced that it would increase capex by 27% over 2002 to Won2.49 trillion (US$2.14 billion). Instead the firm's management has decided to keep the figure flat with 2002 and is said to be looking at other ways of spending the cash, with some due to be spent on a stock buy-back.

EMS Wireless Marks First Antenna Sale to Russia, Supplying Newly Launched 3G SKYLINK Digital Network

Wednesday February 12, 10:36 am ET

ATLANTA, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- EMS Wireless, a division of EMS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: ELMG - News), announced today that EMS's line of RF antennas are used on SKYLINK, Russia's new advanced 3G network in the 450 MHz frequency band that went live in January. The order marks EMS Wireless' entry into the Russian wireless market.

EMS recently completed trials for the SKYLINK network on the International Mobile Telecommunications - Multi-Carrier (IMT-MC) standard. The IMT-MC 450 standard, utilizing CDMA technology, supports new mobile telecommunications services, including high-speed data and Internet access. Now, Russian business users will be able to connect mobile phones to laptop PC's or personal digital assistants, and wirelessly access applications secured behind corporate firewalls with the same speed and efficiency they enjoy from their fixed-office locations.

SKYLINK will eventually cover St. Petersburg and the surrounding suburbs of Russia.

"With this relationship, EMS enters the European marketplace offering a cost-effective solution to operators. Our antennas have the capacity to provide the necessary signal to overlay our customers' existing analog networks with CDMA 2000," said Gerald Hickman, senior vice president and general manager of EMS Wireless.

"We selected EMS for their high-quality RF antennas, which have performed well during the trials, resulting in our decision to contract EMS for our antenna needs throughout our deployment. EMS antennas offer an 80-degree beam width, which will enable us to ensure more reliable service to our subscribers with fewer dropped calls," said Sergei Demykin, Network Coverage group manager, Delta Telecom.
