I have zero sympathy for the goals of the Confederacy.

Ray,

Apply your fine powers of perception to what you call the goals of the Confederacy.

Did the soldiers themselves want a fight? Or was it the same ones that ever and always send young men into harm's way, the politicians?

Following the battle of Chickamauga, the Union troops were bottled up in Chattanooga by the besieging Confederates. As the stalemate lingered, pickets of the opposing armies established a truce between themselves and for weeks on end were seen playing cards, Reb against Yank, swapping coffee for tobacco and reading one another's letters and newspapers from home.

Then, as now, they were common peaceable folks whose last desire on earth was to be far from home, enduring unbelievable hardship to kill their erstwhile countrymen.

Governments sent those fine men to their doom...the average soldier wanted only to go home, see his family and get on with his life.

You do not have to agree with his government's politics to honor the soldiers' valor.
