Very thoughtful post.

No, I'm about 5 years too young for that stuff - I turned 45 this year. My older brother was old enough and had a draft number that was low when the draft ended. He was lucky.

I joined the Navy Post-Vietnam to benefit from the Veterans benefits which were offered as an inducement to enlist. These were unilaterally rescinded by Reagan's administration.

I'm a big believer in fair play. I believe in Enlightened Self-Interest. We all benefit by thinking we will leave a negotiation better than we arrived. This is frequently the case and in the ideal, is the basis of socially conscious regulated capitalism, of which I'm a proponent. Use the free market but don't let orders of magnitude separate the best from the worst players. There are 9 orders of magnitude that separate the richest from the poorest nations. There are at least 7 orders of magnitude in the United States that separate the richest from the poorest. Many of the poorest are locked in a cycle where they never get the boost they need to get into the game.

PC is simply RESPECT, as coug so aptly said. Respect for the totality of the position that someone is in. I'm not sure we have to do away with blonde jokes but I don't personally tell them.
