The Moral Authority of the United Nations

A Jan. 16 press release from the U.N. Conference on Disarmament announces the opening of the conference's 2003 session:

The session will open under the presidency of Ambassador Rakesh Sood, Permanent Representative of India to the Conference on Disarmament. The presidency of the Conference rotates amongst its member States according to the English alphabetical order; each President holds office for four working weeks. During 2003, the presidency of the Conference also will be held by Indonesia, Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, Ireland, and Israel.

Apparently Iraq will preside over the Conference on Disarmament sometime around midyear--by which point, of course, America is likely to have liberated it from Saddam Hussein's dictatorship. Will the U.N. ever get around to thanking America for saving it from being even more of a laughingstock than it already is?
