Violence Pushes LA to Murder
Capital Status

LOS ANGELES — Pushed by a storm of gang violence, a wave of
homicides washed through Los Angeles last year and made it the
nation's murder capital, the Daily News reported today.

With a population of about 3.6 million, Los Angeles ended 2002 with at
least 656 killings, making it the nation's murder capital, the newspaper
reported.

New York City, with about 8 million people, had 561 homicides this past
year. Chicago, with a population of 2.8 million, had 645 killings, the
newspaper reported.
