I am posting this bio in its entirety to remind us as to what constitutes greatness. If you want a bio of TR, I recommend you go read the first two volumes of Edmund Morris' biography, and await the third volume due out in a couple of years. THEN you may have some sense of what TR was about. Bush DOES have some Rooseveltian qualities. TR was roundly criticized early on in his administration for inviting Booker T. Washington to a one on one dinner -- the first black man to ever be invited to the White House for dinner. Bush appointed the first black Secretary of State, as well as the first black National Security Advisor (and two of the most competent to hold the office in years, in my view). Roosevelt believed in using the strength of the American military to accomplish his foreign policy objectives. Bush has done precisely the same thing. "Speak softly and carry a big stick". While there are those who argue that Bush hasn't "spoken softly", I disagree. Bush has been quite restrained given the nature of the attack that has confronted us. Measured, confident, undeterred. VERY Rooseveltian. Roosevelt had many accomplishments. But the most important similarity is the absolute integrity competence. Bush has it, Roosevelt had it. These are the characteristics that give the rest of it meaning, for without integrity, you end up with a Bill Clinton and without competence you end up with a Jimmy Carter. Bush isn't a Roosevelt at this time. But he may well end up being one of the great presidents of the next 100 years. He does have those qualities that great leadership is made of -- committment, honesty, competence, the ability to manage people to make them do their best -- these are all critical components for the job.
