FYI--Clear Windows Media Player History

Getting previously played files out of your WMP File menu isn't as easy as you'd think. Today Chris Pirillo walks you step-by-step through the process of clearing the list.

By George Crowe

Windows Media Player automatically keeps track of the files you've recently played, listing them in the player's File menu. But clearing this history isn't as easy as you might expect and our viewers are wondering how it's done. In today's Step One, Chris answers this email from a viewer named George who writes:

How can I clear the history in Windows Media Player?

Media Player's Most Recently Used Files list is handy if you want easy access to the files you recently played, but a curse if you'd rather keep your multimedia viewing habits private. If you want the option to delete the list, you'll have to download and install the Windows Media Player Bonus Pack from Microsoft. There are multiple versions, so be sure to download the correct version for your player. Here are the options you need to select to make sure you get the right one:

Select download: Windows Media Player Bonus Pack
Select version: Choose the Bonus Pack for XP or version 7.1 running on Windows 98 or Me.
Select language: This one's self-explanatory.

As Chris demonstrates, the Bonus Pack doesn't just erase the history automatically. Once you've downloaded and installed it, follow these steps to clear your Most Recently Used Files list.

Windows 98/Me

In your Start menu click Programs, Windows Media Player Bonus Pack, and then Windows Media Player MRU Cleaner.
It will ask you if you want to clear the list. Click Yes and you're done.

Windows XP

The MRU list is cleared through an add-on application called the MPXP Tray Control.

From your Start menu click Programs, Windows Media Player Bonus Pack, and then WMP Bonus Pack Tray Control. The Tray Control icon will appear in your system tray in the lower right corner of your screen.
Right-click the icon and it will give you the option to clear the MRU list. You'll also be able to turn it off so Media Player will stop keeping track of the files you play.
