What about the "Nullification Crisis" of 1832?

We came very close to having a Civil War at that time,
and the issue there was clearly tariffs (not slavery).

There is the reason there was a war and the arguments put forth to rouse the public to support the war. The South started the War, I'm not certain Slavery was the real cause. It provided an emotional rallying point. I have no idea what was in the hearts of the men who fought for the South. I can't say I know what was in hearts of the men who fought for the North.

I consider them all American who were willing to die for what they believed in. It may not have been slavery per se but the right to decide the issue themselves.
